2023 Summer Reading - mental health books for your list

Summer is often used as a time to refresh, soak up some sun and dive into a good read. Books can be a powerful tool for growth & healing, and as a supplement to therapy sessions.

While some books contain a lot of science & jargon, we prefer to recommend ones that are "easily digested." We also appreciate good, easy-to-read fiction novels that can delicately tell a difficult story!

Below is a list of our 10 highly-suggested Summer reads that we've recommended to clients, in groups or have used to supplement topics discussed in therapy:

  1. How to Breathe by Ashley Neese :: "Practical guidance for channeling the power of your breath to help you tackle common challenges with mindfulness and serenity."

  2. The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte :: This interactive book helps you address your goals and the values that drive what we do.

  3. The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel van der Kolk :: The psychology behind the challenges that arise from trauma and some of the techniques therapists use to help with coping and in recovery.

  4. The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson :: Lori recommends this one a lot to help reinforce the idea that doing small, daily tasks is what helps us make progress and get ahead in the long run.

  5. Food Triggers by Rhona Epstein :: The author is a licensed psychologist and certified addictions counselor, and discusses working with your body chemistry to manage food issues & impulse eating.

  6. Unf*ck Your Brain by Faith G. Harper, PhD :: A no-nonsense book about "using science to get over anxiety, depression, anger, freak-outs, and triggers."

  7. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover :: A fiction romance novel about a woman's first love, the arising challenges within her new relationship and the effects of domestic abuse.

  8. Captivate by Vanessa Van Edwards :: "Shortcuts, systems and secrets for taking charge of your interactions at work, home and in any social situation."

  9. Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score :: Lori doesn't read a lot of fiction, but after seeing it everywhere on social media she read this one in a few days. This romance novel is an easy read about a runaway bride, her family dynamics & newly found (but challenging) small town life.

  10. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo :: An oldie but goodie, this book provides stories and techniques for decluttering your space. (There was a Netflix series also created, featuring Kondo.)

The books listed above cover a range of topics that we can learn about, explore & use for our benefit. By incorporating these books into your Summer reading, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself, struggles and personal goals.

Reading itself can be cathartic and often provides a sense of hope, inspiration & comfort.

We encourage you to add these to your list of reads and use them on your journey!
