Items for your home to support mental health

Mental health support doesn't stay within the walls of our therapy office.

In today's go-go-go society, our homes have become the place where we seek shelter from stressors and life's challenges.

As a therapist, I encourage you to create a physical environment that will support & promote good mental health.

Utilize any resources you have to support emotional wellness. From specific playlists to plants to sleep support, there's an endless amount of home items we can use for mental health.

MENTAL HEALTH MUST-HAVES YOU MAY ALREADY HAVE IN YOUR HOME

It's not to say we all have to go out and purchase a bunch of new stuff. You may have many of these things in your home already!

Plants :: Indoor plants help bring nature into your home and can promote relaxation. Snake plants and lavender can help with stress-relief and air-purifying.

Aromatherapy :: Scents such as eucalyptus, lavender, citrus can have a variety of impact on mood. Certain scents can have calming effects while others can be mood boosting.

Bedtime :: Sleep is vital to emotional (and physical) health. Comfortable bedding, a sleep mask and specific colors can help with relaxation and promote good sleep hygiene.

Lighting :: Warm, soft lights are more calming than harsh, white lights. Think about the lighting in your home, specifically the ones you use prior to sleep.

Sound :: Nature sounds, calming tones, white/pink/brown noise and specific playlists can create a certain atmosphere. Depending on if you're trying to relax, shift your mood or distract yourself, music can be a powerful way to achieve the outcome.

Organization :: I often speak with clients about ensuring their physical environment reflects how they would like to feel internally. Clearing clutter, organizing, purging items, and having systems in your home can contribute to a calmer, more productive environment.

Hobbies :: Because your home is likely where you spend a lot of your time, it's important not to be neglectful of the things you enjoy. Being able to "zone out" is a great way to destress, but it's even more important to make space & time for engaging in a hobby. Whether it's reading, painting, dancing, learning, etc you probably have things in your home that you love.

Other things such as books, journals/workbooks (check these out), supplements and salt lamps are simple items that may be good to have if you struggle with anxiety, experiencing stressors or looking to support your mood.
