When is the best time to see a therapist?

"There's a lot going on my life right now."

"I'm going through a breakup."

"I have a lot of stress and I don't know how to deal with it."

"I'm feeling overwhelmed."

Sound familiar? It's okay, you're not alone...I get these messages all the time!

We have a lot going on in our lives!


SOOO WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE A THERAPIST?

Have you ever had a though like: "something happened, do I need to talk to someone?"

My answer to that? ... Absolutely! If something is going on, reach out for help!

There's never a "right" or "best" time to seek support.

You don't have to be experiencing a catastrophic event or in crisis to make that call. People see therapists for a variety of reasons!

Let's talk about the not-so-obvious reasons why clients come to see me...

THE LESSER-TALKED-ABOUT REASONS PEOPLE SEEK THERAPY

  • family history of mental health

  • disproportionate anger or rage

  • feeling overwhelmed or apathetic

  • socially withdrawn

  • changes in life

  • anticipation of an event, change or circumstance

  • something is keeping you up at night or nagging at your mind

  • constantly feeling like something is "wrong" or "off"

  • pain or other symptoms that aren't attributed to medical/physical issues

  • encouragement from family, friends, teacher or a doctor to talk to someone

Of course this list is not all-inclusive. I'd rather encourage you to err on the side of caution.

Don't let anything fester in your mind or gather enough power to spin out of control.

If something is on your mind, there's probably a reason.

My Golden Rule for Therapy . . .

If you're thinking about something more than you'd like to be, it might be time to get support.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Only about 40% of people who struggle with mental health see a therapist. When things are left untreated, unsaid or you try to ignore something that's bothering you, there's a chance it can spiral out of control or "get worse."

You have to take care of your mental health just like you do your physical health.
